Tea Party

One of Emma's favorite toys is her tea set. It gets even more use now, though Will often plays a little differently than Emma!

The boy way to have a tea party:

And Emma's way:

They do a great job pretending to make and drink tea together.

Playing pretend is so much fun!

Real Haircuts

I can't believe its nearly been two weeks since Emma and I got our hair cut! Our extremely talented friend, Sarah, did our hair and we love it!

I went first and Emma enjoyed watching me, but kept asking if I was done yet so it could be her turn!

Did a great job sitting still!

She was so excited!

When I asked her if she wanted it cut short, she said she wanted "a little bit of hair"....so we went with short!

Big girl!

She looks so grown up with her new haircut, don't you think?

And since there were no pictures of my actual haircut, here is a decent shot of just me, although its hard to tell how short the bob is in the back! I love it!

Going Shopping

This past weekend we spent some time down at the outlets. We had some Christmas money to spend and made a day of it to get out of the house.

Emma was especially excited because she had birthday money specifically to buy clothes. She loves shopping; everything she sees is "so cute" and she tells us "I love this so much". She is also a thoughtful shopper, and is constantly suggesting items for Will, Daddy, Mommy, etc.

We were at the Gap outlet waiting for Martin to finish trying some things on and the kids clothes is right next to the fitting rooms, so I was looking at some things for Emma and Will. Emma found a yellow polka dot shirt and declared it "so cute, I love it Mommy, I want this one!" It was adorable to be sure, and we were planning to let her pick out her own clothes (within reason). So we talked about it.

We told her that since it was more expensive (it must have been part of the brand new spring line) she needed to realize that if she spent her money on this shirt she could probably only get one other outfit. But, if we shopped around a little more she could end up getting 3 or 4 outfits somewhere else. Her decision: 3 or 4 outfits!

We opted for the Children's Place, gave her a big bag, and I followed her around while she picked out her favorites. Here's a look at her haul!

Not too shabby! Her first pick was her flip flops. She has been asking for flip flops for 8 months easily, so it was exciting of all of us to see her get to buy them! She also picked out a hat and a summer dress. And since I bought several pairs of shorts at the end of summer, I encouraged her to pick shirts instead.

Trying out her new flip flops at home (incidentally, she was dying to try them on in the store, so she plopped down in the middle of the racks, pulled off her boots and socks, and shuffled around in them while still strapped together).

Her hat:

And posing in a new outfit (Mommy, my shirt matches my flip flops!)

She handed over her money and the cashier gave her back change.

It was such a fun experience for her, and a great way to start learning about money, too!

Cute, cute! We can't wait for warmer weather!

More Signing

Will recently started signing milk, putting his "words" at three...more, eat, and now milk. Funny how they all involve eating, huh?

Watching Emma and Will both learn how to communicate has been so much fun. I remember thinking and wondering with both of them if they would ever get it. Those weeks and months of repeating more after every bite felt so long and pointless. And then, one day, they both just got it. The sign was there, it was obvious, they did it with purpose, and we were thrilled! Maybe signing milk or more isn't huge in the grand scheme of parenting, but those little achievements are sweet moments along the way, and we will not ever forget them.

I know that sometimes life with kiddos seems mundane and monotonous. Do not open the cabinets...Food stays on the table...Only two sheets of toilet paper...Be kind and share...Another poopy diaper...Another load of laundry...Vacuum again...Pick up the toys...You name it. But somewhere in the monotony of it all there is joy instead of drudgery. Everything is more important that what I'm actually doing. All to the glory of God is more than simply a nice slogan or mantra. It has to be the way I live in the unspectacular times or its worthless in the spotlight moments.

Maybe signing milk or more isn't huge in the grand scheme of parenting, but those little achievements are sweet moments along the way. We will never forget them, and try to always thank God for them. A breath of fresh air on this long way home.

Getaway!

Today we got back from a two-night stay at The Inn at Michell House, a bed and breakfast on the Eastern Shore - an early anniversary celebration! Many thanks to Omi, Pap-Pap, and Grandma for staying with Emma and Will so that we could make the trip and have the time on our own.

The view across the pond by the Inn.

Our room was beautiful! A canopy bed, fireplace, paintings and period decor...it was great.

There was a wedding under this arbor over the weekend. The Inn is in the background.

We had amazing weather the whole time. It was perfect for sitting outside and reading.

Enjoying the hammock and time with each other!

Every 5 minutes

Will loves playing on his own now. Its great to see how well he entertains himself and is getting so much more independent. I decided to take a picture of him every 5 minutes during his play time the other day to try to capture what it looks like from our end of things.

Start: basket full of toys.

5 minutes in: basket and Will have both scooted, still a few toys inside.

10 minutes in: basket is mostly empty and a little more scooting

15 minutes in: Where's Will?

Oh there you are, Will! Book corner time!

20 minutes in: Will is tuckered out! Time for nap!

Update: Will

Thursday morning I took Will up to AI DuPont Children's hospital for his appointment with the GI specialist. Everything went well; he is going on a new medication (prilosec) that will take another week or so to start working, so he is continuing to take the Zantac until then. We also had some blood work done and are going to have an upper GI scan done to determine if there is anything wrong with his plumbing (like a small stomach) that could be making things worse. And I am supposed to cut cow's milk protein out of my diet, which is probably going to be one of the hardest things because I love milk, cheese, etc so much! Hopefully when the new medication kicks in I will be able to go back to milk. The doctor also commented that he sounded a little wheezy and I should probably give our pediatrician a call.

I got an appointment to have Will seen around 3pm. Everything got a little crazy at that point. The nurse practitioner who saw Will left the room after just a quick look at him and brought a nurse and a heart rate/oxygen monitor. They hooked Will up and said that his breathing was accelerated and his wheezing concerning and that they wanted me to take him to the ER right after having a nebulizer treatment. Will responded to the treatment well, but was still having some labored breathing, and then they told me they wanted to transport him to the ER via ambulance. They told me not to worry, that he was responding well to everything, but because he is so young, they needed to address it quickly. The whole time at the doctor's office, Will smiled and cooed at everyone!

The paramedics arrived while I was getting Will dressed, so all I had to do was get him in the carseat and they took him out to the ambulance and strapped him to the stretcher. About this time Martin called me from work, and I tried to tell him everything that was going on, but it didn't come out completely clearly. I ended up calling him back while we drove north to give him all the details. My mom had come to watch Emma for Will's GI appointment, so she was able to stay and keep Emma, so we didn't have to worry about finding someone last minute, which was great.

Will slept the whole way up to the hospital, and his vitals remained good, though he was given oxygen just to be safe. The paramedics were great, and continued to reassure me that Will would be fine. Martin met us at the ER and we were able to walk in together. I am so glad we were able to take the ambulance up. Not only did I not have to drive, but we were taken right in since they already knew we were coming.

In the ER Will remained pretty much as pleasant as ever. He smiled at all the doctors and nurses. He was diagnosed with bronchiolitis caused by RSV. We were told that there is a 1 week version of the virus and a 3 week version of the virus, so we are hoping that this is the one week! They used a vacuum to suction the mucus out of his nose, which he hated. But while they were holding his arms down to get ready for the suction, he started giggling as a nurse tickled his armpits...what a sweatheart! Will had another nebulizer treatment in the ER and we were sent home with one also. We ended up being discharged around 7:30, so only about 3 hours in the ER!

Will did not sleep great that night, but he was doing better when we went back to the pediatrician in the morning for his follow-up appointment. He slept most of Friday afternoon, and seemed to be doing much better. Saturday was a little more rough. He did not seem to respond to the nebulizer treatments as well in the morning, but by the afternoon was doing better. He slept about 5 hours straight through last night, and today seems almost completely back to normal! The doctor in the ER said there would be good days and bad days, and we have seen both in the last two days.

We really appreciate the many prayers for Will and for us! Here are some specific things that you can pray for:

  • That Will continues to recover and respond well to the treatment
  • For Emma as she struggles at times with the extra attention that Will needs. She is doing much better with this and is very sweet. She says "poor Will" and "sick Will" and likes to watch the nebulizer.
  • That both Martin and I would stay healthy! We both feel a little under the weather and are hoping that is just from lack of sleep.
  • For Will's reflux medication to bring relief.
  • That we would continue to trust God through these trials, and then even more once things are back to normal!

That's Will in his little hospital gown. You can't even tell from this picture that we were in the ER!

"I Want Tea"

We were having our morning snack today and Emma said something to me. I didn't quite catch it; she repeated the same phrase. The third time it made sense. "I want tea."

I stared at her and she grinned. I asked her if she said she wanted tea and she flashed her smile again. "Emma say 'I want tea, please.' "

"Please."

It wasn't her first sentence, but it was the first that was such an unprompted direct expression of a specific desire. So I made tea and took some pictures. Nothing quite goes with tea out of a china teacup like goldfish.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

We have been SO busy the last 2 weeks! It has been fun, but it was also nice to get back to our normal routine today. Here are just a few pictures from what we have been doing!

Emma loved playing with some special Christmas stickers

And we made a bunch of Christmas cookies. Emma loved to watch, and also got to help. She did a great job unwrapping all of the Hershey's kisses for our Peanut Blossoms!

Will is an adorable little boy, and is full of smiles for us all the time now!

Emma had a blast unwrapping presents (I think we opened 7 different times!). This expression is for her own stick of chapstick, which is her reward for using the potty.

Mmmmmmmmmmmm

Our Christmas morning at home together!

Emma loves snow this year! She was so scared last year, but loves her new snow boots and walking through the snow.

Martin and I got to go out for dinner New Years Eve with Karene and Jeremy while the grandparents babysat for the 3 kiddos. We had a special dinner in downtown Baltimore and brought home cheesecake from Cheesecake factory so that we could watch the fireworks on TV instead of staying out! Joshua and Will posed for us before we headed out:

We got it...

the nasty stomach bug, that is. Our whole small group at church was circulating a bug, and we managed to avoid it for two weeks. Monday night was really rough for Martin, and he was passed out on the couch for a good portion of Tuesday. Then Emma woke up sick in the middle of her nap Tuesday. Even Will was cranky Monday and Tuesday, so it may have affected him in some way too.

Miraculously, I have stayed healthy, aside from a decreased appetite (probably from living with the plague for a few days!). Everyone was feeling much improved last night, so we ordered a pizza! That seems to be our tradition after getting over a bad illness...I know Martin is feeling really bad when he does not want pizza, and then feeling much better when pizza sounds good again!

I've got some cute pictures from our playgroup field trip last week that I'm editing, so until then, here's Will!

How does Emma like Will?

That is one of the questions we get asked frequently about how Emma is adjusting to life with Will. Sometimes pictures make the point better than words every could.

You be the judge...does Emma like Will?
