Snow

We had our first snow over the weekend! It actually wasn't much of a snow...about half and inch to an inch of icy slush...Emma and Will had so much fun sledding and looking outside at it though, and Will kept saying "no! no!" (snow)

Near the end of this clip you can hear him say "snow"

Snow Day!

We got a solid 6 inches last night! It was a really heavy, wet snow, which makes for some more challenging shoveling. Martin worked from home today, so we took our time getting dug out. Actually I did a large part of the shoveling since he was working, and Emma loved watching me shovel, and especially watching the snow plow. Every time it came by she would say "yay!" and clap for them :-)

She was only a little nervous at first, probably because it looked like we were blocked in the garage.

It was so windy, so we got snow plastered all up along the house.

We took a break from shoveling to walk in the fresh snow. Emma said "sit" and plopped herself down in the middle of it!

She loved trying to run in it too. Because the wind blew so much, there were places that she could walk through fairly easily. She ended up running with her tongue out!

And fun rolling around in it of course.

We tried to make a snowman last time but it was too cold and the snow too dry. We succeed this time, and made an Emma-sized snowman. Martin was able to come out for a little bit and took some pictures of us...Emma wanted to give it a hug!

Fun in the snow!

We got snow on Christmas Day, but Emma was not able to go out to play until it was almost gone because it was so windy here. We had gusts of 50 mph winds! This morning we woke up to a soft, wet snow and very little wind, so I took Emma out back for a bit.

She fell down our hill and was adamant about brushing the the snow off of her pants and shoes...

She loved running up and down the sidewalk!

She was having so much fun and it wasn't that cold, so we bundled up Will and decided to go for a walk.

I can't say it enough -- I love my Phil & Teds! Today we used the stroller with Emma on top and Will laying flat underneath. He enjoyed napping and it created a nice little warm place for him that was protected from the wind.

Sweet Will

We went to the playground and Emma went down the slide! It was really slick and she would have flown off the end if I hadn't caught her!

When we got home, her cheeks were pink and her hair a mess, but it was so much fun!

We warmed up with tasty hot chocolate!

I know Evan and Sarah are probably making fun of our piddly amount of snow after spending time in Alaska, but hey, its Delaware!

Fun in the Snow

We had a great time on Saturday playing outside with the Johnstons. Emma still has way more fun being held than being in the snow.

Staying warm with Daddy:
Even sitting on my lap while I was sitting on the snow was hard to get her to want to do at first.

We were able to borrow our neighbor's snow tubes and enjoyed tubing down the hill in our backyard. The snow piled up by the plows created a natural barrier with the road. The little guys traveled down the hill faster than we anticipated, and David almost went over the snow pile the first time down! We wised up though, so either Dave or Martin stayed at the bottom to catch David and Owen as they flew off the tube at the end of the hill!

Martin took Emma inside while I stayed out a little longer. Emma enjoyed watching from inside and waving way more than being in the snow!

Its beginning to look a lot like Alaska!

We thought the snow we got back in December was a big deal...until the blizzard hit Friday night! It is impressive to be sure. We got about 30 inches by the official estimates, and everywhere in the Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey band of snow got at least 2 feet!

The snow stopped late in the afternoon yesterday, so Martin and I ventured out to shovel a little and take a look at the snow.

Our front door:

Sitting on top of the snow we shoveled out of the driveway. Since it was such a wet snow it packed down fairly easily.

We've had a plow come through a couple of times and standing on top of it I was level with our bedroom windows.

Emma was taking her nap while we were outside, so we had some fun playing with her after she woke up.

Then, after dinner, Emma was walking around in the living room and went over to her coat and scarf and started carrying them around with her. It seemed like she wanted to go outside, so we bundled her up and took her out to look at some of the snow.

Today we are looking forward to taking her out in the snow and seeing if we can get her to enjoy playing a little!

Emma in the snow

A few weeks ago when we had the big snow, I took Emma out to get some pictures of her sitting in it. Well, lets just say that she was less than impressed with the snow and looked pretty much like this every time I tried to sit her down in it:

We got our second snow of the week (!!) this morning, so I thought I would try with her again. Instead of crying the whole time she whimpered a bit and looked pensive. Then I guess she got more used to the snow and settled for content:

And even took a closer look at the snow. PS...it looks like I used a cool effect on this picture, but I just dumped the camera in the snow accidentally and the fogginess is from the snow...

Emma even settled for pretending to play with the snow. This is her "I cannot look like I am enjoying this but I will move my hand back and forth in this crazy white stuff"

Snow in Delaware!

We are excited about the snow! Last year we had a dusting or two, and the "big snow" of the year was maybe an inch or two. Well it started snowing during the night, and we have close to a foot now - which is TONS for our area. It is still snowing hard, too.

Martin shoveled around 3 and you can hardly tell that he did anything just a few hours later.

We bundled Emma up in my old snowsuit and took her outside for just a few minutes. She was so cute getting ready, as if she new that something new and exciting was happening!

Typical Emma having fun - with tongue out!

The view out our front door now (taken through the storm door which the snow is up against so high again that we can't get it open)

snow falling

A quiet evening for the Dunphys tonight. We've had the blinds up and been watching the snow fall the last few hours, and enjoyed mugs of hot chocolate. The forecast is for 6-12 inches overnight, which would be awesome, but still seems very unlikely. There's about an inch on the ground right now, which looks beautiful. We'll see what comes over night!

Snow!

Tuesday was the first real snow in Delaware this winter. That statement needs further clarification on several points:

1. Real snow = the snow stayed on the ground for more than an hour. Acutal accumulation was around 1 inch.

2. in Delaware = it doesnt not really snow in Delaware. Instead, the winter mocks us by sending a light dusting and then freezing rain. Snow in Delaware is in fact more rare than it was in Chestertown at college. And that is a sad thing.

All that being said, it was Emma's first "real" snow, and so I had to put her in her little snow suit and get a picture! She was wide awake until we stepped outside; then her eyes snapped shut.
